TEMPE, Ariz. Oleksandr Zinchenko Manchester City Jersey . -- Tyrann Mathieus terrific rookie NFL season has come to a premature end. Arizona coach Bruce Arians on Monday confirmed Mathieu tore an ACL and sustained further damage in his left knee and will undergo surgery. Mathieu, who earned the nickname "Honey Badger" in his days at LSU, was Arizonas starting safety and had been in on almost every defensive play for the Cardinals. He was injured returning a free kick after John Abraham had tackled Kellen Clemens in the end zone in the third quarter of Arizonas 30-10 victory over St. Louis on Sunday. After Mathieu was buried in a pile of tacklers, he tried to jog off the field but his knee buckled and he collapsed. Mathieu blew a kiss to the crowd as he was carted off. "I appreciate everyone prayers," he said in a tweet on Sunday. "We go through things in life to test our faith & strength." Arians indicated the injury was extensive and said he doubts Mathieu would be ready for training camp next year. The surgery probably will happen next week and the recovery period will be "a long one," the coach said . "Hell have some ACL and LCL repair and too many other Ls for me to get into," Arians said. "Its a shame." Mathieu was considered a risk when the Cardinals selected him in the third round of this years draft. A Heisman Trophy finalist at LSU in 2011, he was dismissed from the team and kicked out of school for marijuana-related issues and was out of football in 2012. But the 5-foot-9 dynamo was a great addition to the Arizona squad and nearly impossible keep off the field. "Hes been fantastic and hes a leader," Arians said. "Very seldom do you see young guys come in and become a leader, especially in the secondary like he has. His personality is infectious with the guys because he loves football. Hell stay out there and practice all day and go as hard as he can. Those are guys you miss." Rashad Johnson will return to the safety spot. Arians said Mathieu cried when the two talked. "He was sad. Hes never been injured. These guys that get hurt for the first time, its devastating," Arians said. "When you take away the thing he loves the most and works so hard for, he was devastated. But hell get over it. Hes strong. Hes got a lot of support." In his first game, he chased down St. Louis Jared Cook and knocked the ball out of the tight ends hands just before the Rams receiver reached the goal line. Mathieu, a starter from the second week of the season, has the second-most total tackles on the team with 63 and second-most solo tackles at 56. He had one sack, one interception, one forced fumble and 15 passes defenced. "I still think he should get rookie of the year defensively," Arians said. "The job he did in the three positions that he played (safety, nickel back and cornerback). I dont know if it will hurt him where somebody else will get it, but he meant a lot to us because of his flexibility and his positions. It will take two guys to take his place." Close friend and teammate Patrick Peterson tweeted his support. "Man I just want to wish my boy (at)Mathieu--Era for a speedy recovery," Peterson wrote. "Hurt me to my heart to see a King go down like that." Gauteng High Court Judge Dunstan Mlambo ruled Tuesday that South African media houses will be allowed to install three remote controlled cameras in court for the Olympic athletes trial starting next week to capture images that likely will be seen by millions around the world.FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Roddy White finally looked himself Thursday, his right foot propped up on a stool in front of his locker, a big smile on his face as he talked about his ankle and hamstring. He hasnt felt this good all season. It showed. White is confident hell be back in the lineup for the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, nearly a month after his last game and closer to 100 per cent than hes been since training camp. He was close to playing last weekend at Carolina after returning to practice late in the week, but the Falcons decided to err on the side of caution this time. White acknowledges that it might have been a mistake to play at the beginning of the season when he was clearly still bothered by a high ankle sprain. "Any time youre an athlete, your body finds ways to overcompensate for any injuries you have," White said. "I wanted to be out there with my teammates from the start of the season. ... Should I have rested it? Maybe so. Maybe I would be completely healthy by now and ready to go. But it is what it is at this point. Im ready to play now. I can go out there and try to help get this thing turned around." The Falcons (2-6) are one of the leagues most disappointing teams, largely because of a major series of injuries that took out the teams other top receiver, Julio Jones, for the rest of the season. Atlanta hosts the first-place Seattle Seahawks (8-1) on Sunday, having lost five of its last six games. "Its always frustrating when you dont win," White said. "Its more difficult when youre not affecting the game. Its tough just sitting on the sideline. You want to be out there. You want to help your team." White has been listed as limited during both practices this week, but that is merely a precaution to make sure he can handle the workload. So far, so good. "Im pretty sure Im going to be out there on Sunday," he said. Kevin De Bruyne Manchester City Jersey. "I wanted to get out there and have a full week of practice before I played in a game. This is the first full week Ive gone through. So Ill be ready to play." White was initially injured in a preseason game, spraining his right ankle. He played the first five games but hardly looked like a player who was just the fifth in NFL history to have three consecutive seasons with at least 90 catches and 1,200 yards receiving. He had only 14 catches for 129 yards and no touchdowns before injuring his left hamstring in Week 5. The Falcons were off the following week, and White has since missed three straight games — snapping a streak of 133 straight games he had played in since entering the league in 2005. With Jones and White both on the sideline, quarterback Matt Ryan has been forced to rely on a patched-together receiving corps that includes Drew Davis, known mainly for his work on special teams, and former scout team player Darius Johnson. Its no secret that tight end Tony Gonzalez is Ryans favourite target, so opposing defences have taken extra steps to shut him down. Ryan has tried to be more aggressive in getting the ball to those lining up on the outside, but the result has been seven interceptions in the last two games. Not surprisingly, Ryan is eager to add a healthy White to the mix for the second half of the season. "Hes been a really, really good player for us for a long time," the quarterback said. "Its tough to replace the explosiveness he brings. We would love to have him back whenever that is." NOTES: OT Sam Baker (knee), DT Peria Jerry (toe) and LB Stephen Nicholas (thigh) remained limited in practice. DT Corey Peters (knee) was out for the second day in a row. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org ___ Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963 ' ' '
